Now do a dry run of the meeting with your partner or a friend. Did that help? Don’t have the conversation at work until you feel calm and confident that what you are offering will work out well for everyone involved.

And make sure you are around for high-profile events or key times that are critical for bonding. What are these in your workplace?

Now go bargain with your partner to make sure you can attend them.

Also, use the same strategies to counter the flexibility stigma that you used when you returned from maternity leave: leave a note on your office or e-mail when you are unavailable due to a business meeting (so people don’t assume you are with your kids), have a meeting with your supervisor or sponsor to discuss your short- and long-term career plans, and so on.
